Please understand that you do not have to have a Mental Health Care Plan referral form your GP to have an appointment with your psychologist, you may opt to pay for your psychological sessions privately and therefore will not require a referral from a GP.
Please Note: You cannot claim Medicare Rebate for psychological sessions paid privately, or receive rebates from Medicare for appointments made prior to the Mental Health Care Plan date.
To Claim Mental Health Referrals
If you have sought a Mental Health Plan through your GP, please ask your doctor to either post, fax or provide you with the Mental Health Care Plan and bring this paperwork with you to your first session.
The Medicare Extended Safety Net
Once someone has paid a certain amount of out-of-pocket expenses, 80% of the out -of-pocket cost for seeing a psychologist is covered by the Extended Medicare Safety Net. This Safety Net works in addition to the usual medicare safety net. The threshold is reached by the amount of money that an individual (or family) pays during a particular calendar year. Each year the amount of money resets and the threshold must be reached again. Each member attending psychological therapy is advised to contact medicare to find out what their personal/family Safety Net is. To register with Medicare or to gain further information on the Medicare Safety Net, please either contact Medicare on 13 20 11 or review their website: www.hic.gov.au.
